Getting Ready for the Job
Replacing a spark plug on a Chevy Equinox is a straightforward task if you follow a clear sequence of steps. The process begins under the hood, where the spark plug sits on top of the engine. Before you touch any components, make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, the engine is cool, and the ignition is off. This precaution protects you from accidental starts and ensures a safe working environment.
Removing the Engine Cover
First, lift the oil cap and set it aside. The cap is often used as a reference point for the engine cover latch. On the lower right corner of the cover, locate a T30 screw and remove it. With the screw out, pull up on the engine cover. You’ll notice two rubber grommets that help seal the cover. Lift the cover and set it aside, taking care to keep the foam that sits on the corners in place. Removing the foam allows you to see the coil packs and the spark plug more clearly.
Disconnecting the Ignition Coil
With the cover off, you can now see the first coil pack. The coil is secured by a 10 mm bolt. Before you remove the bolt, pull up on the connector’s red tab with both fingers. A click indicates the tab has released. Push the tab down with both thumbs and pull the connector out. Inspect the connector for corrosion or damage, then set it aside. Next, remove the 10 mm bolt that holds the ignition coil. Once the bolt is out, lift the coil up and out of its housing. The coil’s angled position can obstruct access to the spark plug, so moving it clears the way for the next step.
Removing the Spark Plug
Now that the coil is out of the way, you have full access to the spark plug. Use a 14 mm socket attached to a ratchet and an extension. A dedicated spark plug socket can also be used. Insert the socket into the plug’s threaded head and break it loose. If the plug is stubborn, a magnet can help pull it out of the cylinder head. Once the plug is free, remove it completely.
Installing the New Spark Plug and Reassembling
Slide the new spark plug into the socket and hand‑thread it into the cylinder head. Start by getting the first few threads by hand to avoid cross‑threading. Once the plug is bottomed out, tighten it to the manufacturer’s torque specification of 13 ft‑lb. After the plug is secure, reinstall the adjacent coil. Slide the coil down, push it into place, and ensure it seats on the spark plug. Tighten the 10 mm bolt by hand, then torque it to 89 in‑lb. Reconnect the harness, slide it in, and push the red tab down to lock the connector. Finally, replace the engine cover foam, align the rubber grommets, and snap the cover back on. Reinstall the T30 screw, hand‑thread it first, then snug it down. Replace the oil cap and double‑check that the cover is firmly in place.
Final Checks and Test Drive
With everything back in place, start the vehicle and listen for smooth operation. Take a short road test to confirm that no error codes appear and that the engine runs evenly. If the engine runs smoothly and no codes are present, the spark plug replacement is complete. This methodical approach ensures that each component is handled correctly, reducing the risk of damage and maintaining the vehicle’s performance.
Replacing a spark plug on a Chevy Equinox is a manageable task for a DIY enthusiast. By following these steps—preparing the work area, removing the engine cover, disconnecting the ignition coil, removing the old plug, installing the new one, and reassembling—you can keep your vehicle running reliably without the need for a professional mechanic.
